2D Barcode Symbologies are the next step in Symbologies from the known 1D Barcode Symbologies we know and love today. The main form we see is UPC like you would see in the grocery store. Manufacturing and other industries utilize mainly 3of9 and 128 symbologies. All of those are like ladder style 1D Barcode Symbologies.

2D Barcodes are normally read by using 2D barcode readers use camera technology to take a snapshot of the barcode, then process and interpret the symbology type, and translate the data. The data is typically delivered in the ASCII character range, ex: it translated(A, B, C and special characters), through a keyboard type interface, mainly USB Keyboard style. Devices using 2D can take a snap shot like a camera, if the software allows for that delivery capability. Obviously, encryption is used on some 2D devices where sensitive data is used and it is somewhat effective.

The advent of 2D Barcode symbologies opened up the ability to scan most 2D barcodes more reliably, even if the barcode is partially missing, since the barcode is typically repeated across different sections of the barcode and not just in a linear fashion, like UPS.

Additionally, some 2D barcode symbologies were better for laser etching , like Datamatrix engraving it directly onto parts. This etching on metal type items is called Direct Parts Marking. Some 2D barcodes like PDF 417, were idea for storing large amounts of data like drivers license, identifications information, and shipping data, especially large amounts of information that does not change. These are also seen along with a 1D barcode on Patient Wristbands. The 2D on wristbands helps in identifying specifics about a patient, even when the network or systems are not operational, since all data vital to the patient is printed in the PDF 417 2D barcode.

Normally the amount of data, multi-use capability(like DPM), durability, or another specific proprietary use, determines the barcode type or symbology used for 2D. QR barcodes have been a very popular 2D symbology the last few years, especially with companies using them for advertising. This has been used extensively by the smart phone industry, to allow for mobile access to web sites via the URL on the barcode using a quick scan instead of typing. Phone numbers can be dialed from scanning a QR, Information Address VCard Content, and even plain text can be imbedded in a QR code. Some QR allow for color logos, graphics, and even pictures, to be used in the barcode.

Zebra P4T – Field Service

The Zebra P4T and RP4t is an amazing mobile printer from Zebra Technologies. The uses of this printer, are too numerous to cover in one article. The flexibility of the non-rfid version offers many capabilities of the non permanent labels, such as shipping, RMA’s, and operating instructions. With permanent labels, all functions of labeling, bin labeling, and other options are available. Receipts can even be done on a label, if multiple functionality is needed on the printer.

Accuracy and efficiency is increased by on the spot labeling. Labeling for instruction for the next technician is available by either printing the instructions or creating a 2D Symbology label that can be scanned to receive the information or work completed or required from the last technician, if that is not stored in the system.

Patient wristbands and especially Zebra wristbands for identification is a major necessity, in the healthcare industry. Wristbands for patients are the easiest way to identify patients in healthcare facilities. Besides being color coded the pateint wrist bands may have different codes and information concerning a patient’s such as gender and the day he/she was admitted in the hospital, Age, allergies, etc. Zebra Technologies has a wide range of printers for producing wristbands suitable for all types of patients from infants to full grown adults, along with numerous printers somewhat selected by the term of stay.

A lot of considerations go into the Zebra printer to use to print patient wristbands. Will there be a variety of different wristband sizes and colors used? Are the wristbands to be subject to heat or direct sunlight? Will the wristbands be used for short term or long term patient stays? Will the wristbands need to have extremely small text or barcodes on it?

If wristbands will be used for long term patient care, then it is better to choose a thermal transfer printer instead of a direct thermal printer because the printed image lasts longer. Thermal transfer is used where long term durability is a concern and more chemicals will be introducted over time, such as hand sanitisers. Thermal transfer printing is done by heating a carbon ribbon that applies an image to the wristband. Direct thermal printers simply heat the wristband itself creating a darkened image.

Direct thermal printers can be used in situations like outpatient clinics where patients will not need to be identified longer than the few hours. These wristbands printed with direct thermal printing technology will not last long in direct sunlight or heat as the material is very sensitive to heat and will darken making the printed image unreadable. Additionally, they are just not suitable for long-term stay.

If many different sizes and colors of wristbands are needed and it is a short term stay, the HC100 from Zebra provides the ability to have a quick transition from one color to another or one size to another. The HC100 prints the wristbands from preloaded cartridges that are easily loaded and ejected much like bread fits in a toaster. The direct thermal again will last only a few days and is not meant for long term.

If small compact text or barcodes are going to be used on the wristbands then the print quality is a large factor. Because printing with a ribbon results in a more clear and readable image a thermal transfer printer with high DPI (dots per inch) capability should be used for small text and barcodes. 300 DPI is the norm for hi-resolution printing.

Zebra thermal wristbands come in a variety of sizes and colors and may have either adhesive or secure clips for closing the wristband. Zebra also provides wristbands with protective antimicrobial coating to help cut down on the risk of transmitting disease or infection from patient to patient. Zebra patient wrist bands also have very superior resistance to hand sanitizers – a product very commonly used in hospitals and clinics.
With all the varieties of Zebra wristband labels and printers available, every healthcare facility will be able to find a Zebra wristband solution that fits their individual needs for patient identification.

Considerations when buying a barcode printer are many and varied. Barcode printers are devised to improve business processes. They do this by printing a label or tag that is part of a product identification system. This product could be a file, an asset, a library book, a warehouse shelf face, any number of things.

Label and barcode printers are devised to print a label or tag that is part of a product identification system. This could be person, asset, a library book, a warehouse shelf face, a blood or DNA sample or even a patient in hospital. Label and bar code printers can be Portable, Industrial, Desktop, or Portable.

While choosing bar code printers, a business needs to consider its current and also future label requirements. There can be companies that need a printer with modest output features for now, but their requirements can increase in next one or two years. It is here that superior quality and efficiency of a printer matters. There are bar code label printers that reliably operate well for long duty cycles. The barcode printer can print at low resolution of 200 or higher resolution at 300 and 600 DPI. It is important to understand DPI-Dots Per Inch, when choosing a printer. Apart from a wide range of printing resolution options, a good printing technology also ensures high degree of accuracy on multiple media.

Barcode printers can be thermal transfer based or direct thermal based. In thermal transfer printing, the heat from the print-head is applied to the ribbon. The material on the ribbon is then transferred to the label media. This technique is easier on print-head, as the back of the ribbon is very smooth and protects print-head from friction of the media. As TT printing uses a ribbon, it also opens up other options for types of ribbon and label media. Thermal transfer printing is high resolution and flexible, and allows printing on a wide variety of surfaces.

In DT-direct thermal printing, the print-head comes in contact with the label media directly. There is a coating on the label media that turns black as heat is applied to it. Due to this, no ribbon is required. DT printers are good for shipping labels, and temporary printing needs.

While planning for label needs, businesses need to consider the label volume capacity of printers. Light duty printers produce 1,000-5,000 labels per day, medium duty can produce 2,000-7,000 labels per day and heavy duty printers can produce between 5,000 and 10,000 labels per day.

Other key components in good printers include:
•User selectable printer languages
•Stand alone printer applications, eliminating the need for PCs if desired
•Adaptability to changing host environments and applications
•Multi lingual capability

An ideal bar code printer also has competitive pricing, extended warranties, sizeable and varied media inventory and ease of maintenance.

Zebra printers and technologies is everywhere, at least. As a reseller of Zebra
products, I have watched the company grow from a small manufacturing barcode
printer company to the muti Billion dollar, multi national company thatis now
sometimes pronounced Zebra (Zeb-bra).

From the products you buy in retail you will see Zebra in Bin Labels, product
labels, and even in Customer loyalty cards. Membership cards and Kiosk also are
in the retail space.

In healthcare, from the test tube to patient admissions and even blood bags.
The ID badges the healthcare personnel uses, to the patient wristbands all in an
effort to make it safer and more efficient.

This video shows an amazing world of Zebra and how it is everywhere, or
better is there a zebra in it.
