Most of these devices can work at distance of 10 feet to as much as 100 feet from their base antenna.  The HHP and some of the other devices also allow for cascading or adding antennas, so that the 100 feet  can stretch out with daisy chaining of antennas. 

Additionally, batteries are sometimes what makes the choice as some batteries must stay attached to the units requiring the units to be placed in a dock for charging. 

Others such as the PSC and HHP allow for a battery to be charged while in use with another battery.  The HHP 387x come with ability to take it's battery out and plug it directly into the wall for charging.

Other nice features are programming language ready device like the P370/P470 from Symbol with ability to program validation into the key entry and panel view.
