A desktop printer may be the alternative when low volumne or space is a consideration.  Be sure you have considered label changes and cost in your TOC-Total Cost of Ownership.  Additionally be sure the label you need is available.  Custom label cost can be extremly high. 

These are available for use with or without ribbon.  Thermal Transfer will require a ribbon and Direct thermal does not.
